Champions League 2020-21 Preview: Liverpool vs Real Madrid CF

Following their comeback win over the visitors Aston Villa Fc in the Premier League, Liverpool Fc are set to play against the visitors Real Madrid CF in the Second Leg of the Champions League 2020-21 Quarter-final.

Date: 14 April 2021 (Wednesday) ; Time: 8:00 p.m (BST) kick-off ; Venue: Anfield, Liverpool, England.

Given that Liverpool (The Reds) has an enormous task at hand to beat Real Madrid CF for the Return Leg at Anfield, so Jürgen Klopp might continue utilising most of the Players in the Starting XI that defeated the visitors Aston Villa Fc in the Premier League.

However; Key Players like Sadio Mané and Thiago Alcântara might also be brought back in the starting line-up for the upcoming crucial game.

Others like Xherdan Shaqiri, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Neco Williams, Rhys Williams and so on might play some part during the Match.

Yet, after his subpar performance during the First Half of the First Leg of the Champions League 2020-21 Quarter-final against the hosts Real Madrid CF; Naby Keïta might have to wait longer for his next chance to play for the Reds.

What makes the enormous task even more daunting for the Reds is that Real Madrid CF has beaten the Reds in the last 4 encounters between the 2 sides.

The Reds last defeated the visitors Real Madrid CF way back in March 2009, when the Reds crushed a star studded Real Madrid CF 4-0 at Anfield (Second Leg of the Champions League 2008-09 Round of 16).

Perhaps that crushing win could serve as an inspiration for the Reds.

Reds Team Injuries and Suspensions: As a precaution; youngster Curtis Jones missed out for the Aston Villa Fc home clash, due to an unspecified muscle issue. The youngster’s fitness will be monitored over the coming days.

Divock Origi has been out of action as a result of an unspecified muscle injury prior to the the Wolverhampton Wanderers Fc away fixture.

Young Goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher has been ruled out for an indeterminate period, due to an unspecified injury that seems to be a stomach muscle tear.

Captain Jordan Henderson has been sidelined for the foreseeable future, since undergoing a successful corrective surgery on the adductor injury sustained during the Everton Fc home encounter.

Joël Matip has been ruled out for the remainder of the campaign, after sustaining ankle ligament damage during the Tottenham Hotspur Fc away game.

After undergoing successful surgeries on their injured knees, Joe Gomez and Virgil Van Dijk are currently working on regaining full fitness.

The Club has not set any timescale on the return of the Matip, Gomez and Van Dijk as they are unlikely to play this campaign.

Verdict: Real Madrid CF will be acutely aware that if they score a Goal at Anfield that would mean that the Reds would require 3 Goals at least to keep the Tie alive.

The Reds simply cannot afford to miss Goal scoring opportunities like they have been doing during this Season and (despite their comeback 2-1 win) the Reds finishing profligacy were laid bare against the visitors Aston Villa Fc in the Premier League.

To have any hopes of progressing to the Champions League 2020-21 Semi-finals; the Reds forwards (especially Mohamed Salah) has to be ruthless and clinical in their finishing (especially taking the half chances).

Anfield European Nights are legendary as the Reds have produced several memorable wins.

But without the Home Supporters this time (due to the current British Government restrictions pertaining to COVID-19 Pandemic), it may be a tall order for the Reds to overcome the visitors Real Madrid CF.

Yet, it will be foolish for anyone to write off the Reds!
