Premier League 2020-21 Summary: Liverpool vs Wolverhampton

Impressive performances from Georginio Wijnaldum and Mohamed Salah helped Liverpool Fc cruise to a resounding 4-0 win over the visitors Wolverhampton Wanderers Fc in the Premier League Match.

Before the Match, Liverpool Fc (The Reds) made one change from the Squad that had beaten the visitors AFC Ajax. Roberto Firmino replaced the in-form Diogo Jota in the Matchday Squad that faced Wolverhampton Wanderers Fc (The Wolves).

Also 2,000 Fortunate Supporters returned to Anfield for the first time since March 2020. Caoimhín Kelleher continued to deputise as Goalkeeper in place of the injured Alisson Becker while Curtis Jones and Neco Williams kept their spot in the Starting XI.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Naby Keita were named among the substitutes as the Reds’ injury list were shortened with the comeback of both players.

The Wolves looked to be on the ascendancy earlier on despite the Reds dominating the possession. Neco Williams was shown the Yellow Card in the 3rd Minute for a Foul on Pedro Neto. The Reds though were a little bit left open down the flanks as the Visitors were on the Front Foot.

In the 17th Caoimhín Kelleher produced a smart save by tipping the ball away after a cheeky chip from Daniel Podence following an assist from Adama Traoré.

Then in the 23rd after Jordan Henderson crossed the ball over the top; Connor Coady chested down the ball but Mohamed Salah pounced on the it in a flash to tuck the ball past Rui Patrício to give an early lead for the Reds.

VAR decisions had not been favourable at all for the Reds lately but this time the decision went in favour of the Reds as in 44th minute, Sadio Mané was adjudged to have fouled Coady by the Referee Craig Pawson.

The Penalty decision was later reversed and the correct call was made as Mané pulled out of the attempt at a clearance and did not touch Coady on the process. With the lead still intact, the First Half ended at 1-0.

Mané continued to be a menace for the Wolves Defence after the Second Half began as in the 47th minute another Henderson Long Pass was connected well by Mané with One Touch. The Senegalese International struck the ball but was denied by Patrício.

However, the Reds made it 2-0 thanks to a well taken curled shot in to the Top Right Corner of the net by Georginio Wijnaldum outside the Penalty Box in the 58th minute (after a neat pass from Jordan Henderson).

Joël Matip made it 3-0 in the 67th minute for the Reds after a short corner from Jordan Henderson was met by Salah and the Egyptian provided a sumptuous cross that was headed into the net by Matip.

Trent Alexander-Arnold made his return to the side and replaced Neco Williams in the 68th minute. Also, Diogo Jota was later introduced after replacing Roberto Firmino in the 73rd minute.

Alexander-Arnold did not take too long to make an impact in the game. In the 78th minute (with Salah and Mané racing forward for the ball), Nélson Semedo scored an Own Goal from a brilliant cross from Alexander-Arnold to make it 4-0.

Captain Jordan Henderson was replaced by Naby Keïta in the 81st minute with the view of providing ample rest ahead of the Reds Final Champions League 2020-21 Group D Match against the Hosts FC Midtjylland on 09 December 2020.

Kelleher produced another save in the 88th minute by blocking the shot from Rayan Aït-Nouri to deny the Wolves to chance to get a consolation Goal.

The Reds went to complete a resounding 4-0 win over the Visitors.

Liverpool (4-3-3 Formation)

Caoimhín Kelleher – 8: Another superb performance with a clean sheet and produced two brilliant saves to deny the Visitors. Calm and composed throughout the Match and dealt with the Long Balls very well.

Neco Williams – 6: Picked up an early Yellow Card but the Youngster refused to be subdued.

Joël Matip – 8: Brilliant Performance from the Cameroonian. Besides scoring the Goal, defended impeccably.

Fabinho – 8: Defended well alongside with Matip and made crucial interceptions. Dealt the attack immaculately (particularly from Traoré and Daniel Podence).

Andrew Robertson – 7: Managed to deal with the threat from Traoré and linked up well with Mané going forward.

Georginio Wijnaldum – 9: Brilliant, lively and energetic performance from the Dutchman. Scored the Goal that gave the Reds some breathing space.

Jordan Henderson – 8: Produced several crosses including the one resulted in the First Goal. Always looked to get the Reds on the Front Foot and shielded well for the Defence.

Curtis Jones – 6: Quiet game that was overshadowed by the performances of the Seniors around him but the Youngster stuck to the task and kept things simple by passing the ball around quickly.

Sadio Mané – 8: Despite not being able to get his name on the scoresheet, the Senegalese can feel very content with his performance today. Never gave a moment’s respite for the Visitor’s Defence.

Roberto Firmino – 6: Had a relatively quiet game but played well to link up with Mané and Salah.

Mohamed Salah – 8: Grasped the opportunity to score a well taken Goal and provide the sumptous assist that resulted in Matip’s Goal. Near perfect performance from the Egyptian.

Trent Alexander Arnold – N/A: Came on to replace Neco Williams and immediately made an impact with a brilliant cross that resulted in the Own Goal from Semedo.

Diogo Jota – N/A: Brought on to replace Firmino. By the time the young Portuguese was introduced, the Reds were already cruising towards a comfortable win.

Naby Keïta – N/A: Replaced Henderson to freshen up the Midfield as well as to get some much needed Game Time.

Jürgen Klopp – 8: Utilising a threadbare squad and to beat a formidable opponent like the Wolves (4-0) is by no means an easy feat.

After the FC Midtjylland away fixture, the Reds will have a tricky December 2020 schedule to navigate but the return of Keïta and Alexander-Arnold in particular will be a massive relief for the Club.
