Premier League 2020-21 Summary: Liverpool vs Leicester City

Despite the absence of several key players, Liverpool Fc beat the visitors Leicester City Fc 3-0 in the Premier League Match.

With Key Defenders Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez sidelined for an indeterminate period of time, Fabinho recovered in time for the match after pulling his leg during the FC Midtjylland home game. The Brazilian was lined up alongside with Joël Matip in the heart of the defence. James Milner started at Right Back in place of the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Xheridan Shaqiri missed out due to a fitness issue and Reds Youth Academy Player Leighton Clarkson was named on the bench. Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcântara and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were ruled out for this match. In their place, Georginio Wijnaldum, Curtis Jones and Naby Keïta were slotted in the Midfield.

The Reds started the match brightly as Sadio Mané headed the ball into the side netting after a neat assist from James Milner in the 2nd minute.

The Reds got their lead thanks to an Own Goal from John Evans from James Milner’s Corner Kick in the 21st minute.

Young Curtis Jones was lively and during the First Half, he tracked back to stem the attack after stopping Jamie Vardy in the 30th minute.

The Visitors though gave a huge scare as James Justin shot just went past the Alisson after Harvey Barnes assisted.

Shortly afterwards Reds got their Second Goal after a brilliant header from Diogo Jota guided past Kasper Schmeichel following a sumptuous cross from Andrew Robertson in the 41st minute.

Alisson Becker denied the Visitors after Youri Tielmans had his shot saved by the Brazilian who wore the green jersey prior to the match as a mark of respect for the recently deceased Ray Clemence.

Despite missing several key players, the Reds attack were incessant and the defence did well to keep Vardy quiet as the Reds held on to 2-0 commanding lead into the Half Time.

The Reds continued dominating the match. Jota shot went high after another brilliant cross from Andrew Robertson in the 46th minute.

Naby Keïta was later replaced by Nico Williams in the 54th minute as the Guinean sustained a leg related injury and the sight of him stretching surely was the last thing Jürgen Klopp wanted.

James Milner was restored to the Midfield with Nico Williams slotted to the Right Back position. Kasper Schmeichel kept the Visitors hopes alive in the game with several brilliant saves to deny Mané and Roberto Firmino.

Firmino finally got his goal from the corner kick from James Milner in the 86th minute as the Brazilian headed past Schmeichel into the bottom left corner of the net to seal the result for the Reds.

In the view of bringing fresh legs, Jota and Mané were substituted for Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino.

The Reds went on to wrap up a comfortable 3-0 win.

Reds Team Performance Ratings

Liverpool (4-3-3 Formation)

Alisson Becker – 8: As a mark of reverence, the Brazilian wore the green jersey that was worn by the Legendary Reds Goalkeeper Ray Clemence. Clean Sheet along with making a brilliant save to deny Tielmans in the First Half and distributed the ball brilliantly.

James Milner – 8: Two of his Corner Kicks resulted in Goals for the Reds. Vintage performance from the Versatile Milner and did not put a foot wrong.

Joël Matip – 8: Calm and composed. His diagonal passing has improved remarkably.

Fabinho – 8: Kept the Foxes attack quiet (particularly Vardy) and nipped the attack from the bud with several key interceptions.

Andrew Robertson – 8: Superb performance and linked up well with Mané. Provided a brilliant assist that resulted in Jota’s Goal.

Naby Keïta – 7: Much improved performance. Passed the ball neatly and looked to keep the Reds on the front foot. Stretched his leg during the early part of the Second Half and was replaced by Nico Williams.

Georginio Wijnaldum – 7: Kept things tidy with quick passes and distributed the ball well.

Curtis Jones – 7: The youngster is growing in confidence and is slowly repaying the faith shown to him by Klopp. Needs to be more quick in passing the ball from the defence rather than lose possession.

Sadio Mané – 7: On any another day, the Senegalese could have had a Goal for himself but was repeatedly denied by Schmeichel.

Roberto Firmino – 7: After near misses, finally got a well deserved Goal that sealed the game for the Reds. Linked well with Mané and Jota.

Diogo Jota – 8: Another match, another Goal. Undoubtedly becoming an invaluable asset for the team and chipping in with crucial goals. The young Portuguese and Mané were a constant menace for the Visitors.

Nico Williams – 6: Replaced the injured Keïta. Did a decent job. The youngster looked flustered while defending taking too long for clearing the ball and his attacking aspect needs to improve particularly timing the crosses.

Divock Origi – N/A: Brought on to freshen up the attack after being brought on to replace Jota.

Takumi Minamino – N/A: The Japanese International replaced Mané to freshen up the attack.

Jürgen Klopp – 6: The German Coach had to deal with the absence of Van Dijk, Gomez, Mohamed Salah, Thiago, Henderson, Shaqiri and so on. Klopp had done an admirable job by showing faith on young Curtis Jones. To win 3-0 against a top side despite missing several key players is one of the definite signs of a Champion Team.

The Reds will next play against Atalanta BC at Anfield on 25 November 2020 in the Champions League Group D Encounter.
