Liverpool Fc Summer Transfer Window 2020 Assessment

The complexities caused due to the ongoing Corona Virus Pandemic forced FIFA to start the transfer window on August 2020 and ended on October 2020 in line with the requirements of the European Leagues.

Most clubs were grappling with finances due to the effects of the Corona Virus on the club’s revenues. Unlike their rivals, Liverpool Fc (The Reds) had the enviable position to only strengthen a settled squad that won the Champions League 2018-19 Title and the Premier League 2019-20 Title in successive Seasons.

Nathaniel Clyne, Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren were the notable ones that departed Liverpool Fc (The Reds) during the early part of the Summer Transfer Window 2020.

Later towards the final few days before the Summer Transfer Window 2020 (that ended on 05 October 2020), Rhian Brewster left the Reds to join Sheffield United F.C. in search of more game time. Both Loris Karius and Marko Grujić departed the Reds on loan to join Hertha BSC and FC Porto respectively.

In terms of the incomings, the Reds prudently approached the Transfer window and utilised their limited Transfer Budget in buying the Players that were shortlisted by the infamous Reds Transfer Committee.

In buying Konstantinos Tsimikas, the Reds solved one of the areas of concern which was the lack of a reliable Left Back as a Backup for the tireless Andrew Robertson. Prior to that the ageless James Milner was deployed as a Makeshift Left Back, when Robertson was injured or rested.

Despite missing out (on majority of the games during September 2020) as a result of getting infected with COVID-19 and the subsequent thigh injury, Tsimikas will play a vital role as the Reds are due to play several matches within a short space of time. The Greek International will be expected to play more with a view of giving much needed rest for Robertson.

The purchase of Diogo Jota from Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. will be viewed more as a Long-term Player. The young Portuguese is not expected to replace any of the fearsome front 3 of Sadio Mané and Roberto Firmino. He is instead expected to be more as a cover for Mané and Firmino.

Jota is capable of playing playing as a Left Winger or as a Central Striker. This flexibility will be a added bonus for Jürgen Klopp as that will give the German boss more tactical flexibilities to switch Players between positions, if or when required.

The young Portuguese had a mixed start to his Reds career. He started his Reds career coming on as a substitute during the match against Lincoln City Fc (Third Round of the Carabao Cup 2020-21) and against Arsenal Fc, he scored his first Goal at Anfield which was also the winning Goal for the Reds.

Yet in his third game for the Reds, Jota had an underwhelming performance playing against the hosts Aston Villa Fc but the match was ultimately lost due to the defensive deficiencies (particularly from the dependable Players like Virgil Van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold).

The biggest acquisition for the Summer Transfer 2020 however for the Reds was Thiago Alcântara. In the previous Seasons, the Reds struggled to break down sides that were defending deep or in other words “Park the Bus”.

Through intelligent reading of the game, razor sharp passing in to the final third and quick linkup with the Players; the Spaniard astutely breaks down defensive minded teams. Against the hosts Chelsea Fc (The Blues), Thiago was brought on to replace the injured Henderson and made an instant impact by helping the Reds break down the stubborn Blues defences, thereby helping the Reds pick up an crucial away win.

Unfortunately, the Spaniard, Mané and Xherdan Shaqiri were the 3 Players that got ruled out of the matches (held during the latter part of September 2020) as they got contracted with COVID-19.

Thiago will be one of the key influential Reds Players that would define the remainder of the Reds Season as so far the Reds 2020-21 Season was quiet underwhelming especially after getting battered by the hosts Aston Villa for a humiliating record 7-2.

Verdict: During the uncertain times caused due to the Corona Virus Pandemic, Liverpool Fc (The Reds) has done exceedingly well to strengthen the existing squad.

As usual, the Reds were quick and decisive in landing the Players targeted by the Reds Transfer Committee.

This greatly helped the newcomers to quickly settle with the existing squad. Klopp and FSG would feel particularly content with their Summer Transfer 2020 Dealings.

The real challenge from now on is to get the Season back on track especially with the World Class Goalkeeper Alisson Becker ruled out for an extended period of time due to a shoulder injury.
