Reds Column IV

Carabao Cup 2020-21 Summary: Lincoln City vs Liverpool

Following their 0-2 win over Chelsea Fc (last Saturday at Stamford Bridge), Liverpool Fc (The Reds) comfortably brushed aside Lincoln City Fc 2-7 to go through the Fourth Round of the Carabao Cup 2020-21.

It was always going to be Boys v/s Men even though most of the Reds players were rested after the Chelsea Fc match.

Xherdan Shaqiri opened the scoring in the 9th minute with a well struck free kick onto the top right corner (with the ball just kissing the underside of the crossbar). Even the best Goalkeepers in the world could not have stopped that shot.

The Home Side’s defence collapsed by the incessant Reds pressing and in the 17th minute Takumi Minamino curled the ball into the top right corner.

The Reds quickly raced to a 0-3 lead as Curtis Jones too got into the scoring sheet. Rhys Williams supplied the ball in the path of Divock Origi and the Belgian smartly headed on to Curtis Jones as he curled the ball into the top left corner in the 32nd minute.

The match was all wrapped up by the 36th minute as Curtis Jones struck another curled shot to extend the lead for the Reds to 0-4 but this time with a bit of a deflection from the Lincoln City Defender.

A minute after the second half, Minamino made it 0-5 as he had the simplest task to tamely prod the ball into the empty net (after Harvey Elliot’s shot was blocked by Alex Palmer). The Lincoln City Goalkeeper could do nothing about any of Reds goals as the goals kept pouring in.

From then on, Lincoln City were just playing for pride. The League One side finally got a goal to celebrate as Tayo Edun slotted the ball beyond Adrián (in the 66th minute).

Marko Grujić made it 1-6 for the Reds as he struck the ball onto the bottom left corner past the hapless Palmer.

The score line became 2-6 as Lewis Montsama gave more joy for the home side as he headed the ball from Jorge Grant’s Corner.

Divock Origi finally put the icing on the cake and helped himself with a fine goal in the 89th minute as he scored from the right side of the box.

Reds Team Performance Ratings

Liverpool (4-3-3 Formation)

Defence:

Adrián – 7: Made 4 saves but could not do much about the 2 goals conceded.

Nico Williams – 7: Defensively looked more assured but could improve with better attacking sense.

Rhys Williams – 8: Did a fine job playing alongside with the Best Defender in the world. Provided the brilliant ball that eventually led to the Reds second goal.

Virgil Van Dijk – 8: The towering Dutch marshalled the side brilliantly and he was replaced by Fabinho in the 45th minute.

Konstantinos Tsimikas– 7: Solid start for the Greek Debutant. Defensively was compact and looked dangerous going forward.

Midfield:

Harvey Elliot – 7: Looked very lively and never gave a moment’s respite for the Home Side. Could have a scored a goal on another day but he will bid his time for now.

Marko Grujić – 6: The young Serbian passed the ball around quickly and always kept the Reds on the front foot. He helped himself with a brilliant goal in the 65th minute.

Curtis Jones – 7: Scored a brace and was always in thick of the action.

Forwards:

Divock Origi – 10: An assist and a goal for the Belgian as he did what the coach ordered.

Takumi Minamino – 7: The Japanese continued his red hot form by scoring a brace and providing an assist but he will feel gutted to miss out on a Hattrick.

Xherdan Shaqiri – 8: His brilliant curled free kick opened the scoring for the Reds and from then on, there was no turning back. Perfectly linked up with Minamino and Origi.

Substitutes:

Fabinho – 6: Perhaps feeling exhausted from the Chelsea match. Clearly looked jaded as he was not at his best but thankfully, he did not had to sweat too much for this match.

Diogo Jota – 6: Quiet start to his Reds Career as he replaced the energetic youngster Elliot in the 56th minute. He will get more chances to prove his mettle.

Naby Keita – N/A: Replaced Shaqiri in the 74th minute. Brought on to add more stability in the midfield.

Coach:

Jürgen Klopp – 8: The charismatic German coach will be very pleased with the result even though the Reds defence could have dealt better with the 2 goals conceded.

The Reds are next scheduled to host Arsenal Fc (The Gunners) twice for the upcoming Premier League on 28 September 2020 (at 8:00 p.m (BST)) and the Fourth Round Carabao Cup 2020-21 (T.B.C).
