Carabao Cup 2020-21 Preview: Lincoln City vs Liverpool

The reigning World and English Champions Liverpool Fc (The Reds) are due to play the hosts Lincoln City Fc for the Third Round of the Carabao Cup 2020-21.

Date: 24 September 2020 (Thursday) ; Time: 7:45 p.m (BST) kick-off ; Venue: Sincil Bank, England.

One would have to make a trip down the memory lane to recall the last time the two sides met. It was way back in the early 1960’s when the Reds beat Lincoln City Fc (The Imps) 2-0 at Anfield (during the latter part of the Second Division 1960-61 Season).

Back then, the legendary coach Bill Shankly was in his second season as Reds Manager and the Reds were in the rebuilding phase. The Reds got promoted back to the Top flight in the following season (1961-62) and from then on as one would say “…the rest is history”.

Going into the match, the League One side Lincoln City Fc (The Imps) brushed aside League Two opponents and hosts Bradford City AFC 0-5 in the second round of the Carabao Cup 2020-21.

The Reds are record 8 Times English League Cup/ Carabao Cup Winners ahead of the defending Title Holders Manchester City Fc (with 7 Titles).

However, the Reds has not won the English League Cup/ Carabao Cup since Captain Fantastic Steven Gerrard lifted the English League Cup (or called the Carling Cup back then for Sponsorship reasons) during the 2011-12 Season.

The Reds beat the Championship side Cardiff City Fc 3-2 on penalities (after drawing 2-2 in Extra Time).

With the view of keeping his squad fresh for the home match against Arsenal Fc (The Gunners), Jürgen Klopp in all likelihood will rest several senior players that played in the Sunday’s match against Chelsea Fc (The Blues).

Several young players like Nico Williams, Curtis Jones, Sepp Van Den Berg, Harvey Elliot and others youngsters will get their chance to shine.

Even, non-starters like Takumi Minamino, Adrián and particularly Divock Origi might be given the nod and the trio will be looking forward to making use of their limited opportunities to be in the playing XI.

Xherdan Shaqiri might also be given the chance to play, if he can prove his fitness ahead of the game.

The newcomer Diogo Jota might also make his Reds debut.

Reds Team Injuries and Suspensions: Klopp is unlikely to risk playing Joe Gomez despite suffering from a minor knock. Joël Matip (slight muscle issue) and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (knee injury) continues to be sidelined.

Captain Jordan Henderson will surely miss this game and his thigh injury will be carefully monitored.

After being tested positive for COVID-19, Konstantinos Tsimikas will need to have his health condition assessed carefully by the Reds Medicals.

Verdict: Unlike his first few seasons as Reds coach, Jurgen Klopp is now blessed with an array of talents at his disposal. Having so many players to call upon is a big headache but surely a welcome one.

Under Klopp, the Reds only missed out on winning the Community Shield Trophy, the F.A Cup and the English League Cup.

Yet, Klopp’s priorities might most likely be focusing on guiding the Reds to win the Champions League Title again and retain the Premier League Title. But, wining either the English Cup or the F.A Cup or both will be an added incentive.
