Xherdan Shaqiri – Early Career and Abilities

  • Started career at hometown club SV Augst
  • Plays mainly as a Right Winger
  • Capable of playing as a Left Winger and as an Attacking Midfielder
  • Primarily a left footer but adept at playing with both feet
  • Possesses excellent composure, technique, good vision and balance
  • Blessed with terrifying pace and agility
  • Gained the reputation of incessantly tormenting the defenders
  • Superb at direct free kicks and dead-ball situations
  • Has an knack for providing goals assists
  • Likes to cross, play long balls and often plays the ball off the ground
  • Affinity for shooting from long distance
  • Scouted by FC Basel at the age of 8 and joined the youth team
  • Rose through FC Basel’s youth ranks
  • Around July 2009, made his debut as a substitute against FC St. Gallen
  • Helped FC Basel to win the Swiss Super League Title and Swiss Cup Title

Xherdan Shaqiri – FC Bayern Munich Career

  • As a long-term replacement for the ageing Franck Ribery or Arjen Robben, the young Swiss Playmaker joined the Bavarian club for 2012-13 Season
  • Made 1st appearance as a half-time substitute on 20 August 2012 in a DFB-Pokal match against SSV Jahn Regensburg 
  • Helped FC Bayern Munich to win the German Bundesliga Title and DFB-Pokal Title
  • Won the Champions League 2012-13 Title with the Bavairian club (despite not playing in the final)
  • Later, won the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup with FC Bayern Munich 
  • Was unable to cement a regular place in the starting XI
  • Overall performances with FC Bayern Munich was quite underwhelming

 

Xherdan Shaqiri – Inter Milan

  • With the view of getting more regular starts, joined Inter Milan around January 2015 (despite the firm interest from Stoke City Fc)
  • Made debut against Empoli F.C playing in the last 16 minutes as a substitute
  • Had an underwhelming rest of the season as Inter Milan finished 8th in Italian Serie A

 

Xherdan Shaqiri – Stoke City Fc

  • Joined around August 2015 (after Inter Milan’s self imposed deadline), despite Stoke City Fc already agreeing to an club record transfer fee (under £13 Million)
  • Against Hull City, became the first Stoke City player to score two long-range goals in a Premier League Match (around October 2016)
  • Helped Stoke City Fc finish 13th position
  • Was often accused by the fans for lack of commitment and not being up to the challenge (during the 2017-18 Season) as the team was battling relegation
  • Stoke City Fc got relegated, but the Swiss International finished as top Goalscorer for the club

 

Xherdan Shaqiri – Reds Career (so far)

  • Around July 2018, Liverpool Fc (The Reds) triggered the “relegation” release clause of under £14 million release clause
  • Joined the Reds to add quality and experience in the bench
  • Debuted for the Reds as a late substitute (around August 2018) against West Ham United, he came on as a late substitute
  • Coming on as a substitute scored twice as the Reds beat Manchester United (Red Devils) 3–1 win and first Reds league win against the Red Devils since March 2014
  • Played a crucial role in helping the Reds overcome FC Barcelona in the Champions League 2018-19 Semi Finals (2nd Leg)
  • Won the Champions League 2018-19 Title with the Reds (despite not playing the final)
  • Won the UEFA Super Cup Title and Fifa Club World Cup Title with the Reds
  • Following a prolonged injury, scored his first goal of the 2019-20 in the Merseyside Derby (around December 2019)
  • Won the Premier League Title with the Reds

 

Verdict: Despite having an unconvincing Reds career of inconsistent performances and injures, Shaqiri will still be regarded as a Reds Cult Hero.

For the 2020-21 Season, the Reds are expected to play several games in space of few days. So, Jürgen Klopp will look to rotate the squad to keep the squad fresh.

As such, the Swiss International will have a crucial role to play in the Reds Premier League Title defence.
