Liverpool Fc (The Reds) were beaten 5-4 on Penalties by Arsenal Fc (The Gunners) in the FA Community Shield 2020, after Match ended in a 1-1 draw in Full Time.
After being assisted by Bukayo Saka in the 12th minute, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (cutting inside) opened the scoring with a well struck curling shot into the bottom right corner past the diving Alisson Becker.
Before heading into the Penalty shootouts, the Reds later equalised through Takumi Minamino in the 73rd minute.
The game ended 0-0 on Full Time and headed straight to the Penalty Shootouts which the Gunners ended up winning 5-4.
Unfortunately, for the Reds and (for the Player himself) Rhian Brewster was the only one to miss in the Penalty Shootouts.
And…another Community Shield Trophy bites the dust for the Reds.
The Reds will need to quickly shrug off the disappointment of missing out on the chance of winning the Community Shield Trophy.
Key Players like Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold will be expected to return from their respective injuries in time for the Reds opening Premier League game of the season (hosting Leeds United).
Reds Team Performance Ratings
Liverpool (4-3-3 Formation)
Alisson Becker – 7: Absolutely helpless in stopping Aubameyang’s opener. Yet made a smart save to deny Eddie Nketiah in the First Half. Did not had much to do in the Second Half.
Neco Williams – 4: Not a game for any youngster to bring on especially to face against the likes of a World Class Finisher with deadly finishing like Aubameyang. But could have done better with better positional sense in marking Aubameyang. Going forward, never posed the same attacking threat as Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Joe Gomez – 6: Sloppy defending in the First Half and constantly getting overran by Nketiah. Later switched to Right Back but did very little to impact the game.
Virgil Van Dijk – 7: As expected from a World Class Defender. Marshalled the defences well and provided several sublime long range passes.
Andrew Robertson – 8: Provided several sumptuous crosses but unfortunately no Reds shirts to convert the chances. Defensively was compact.
Georginio Wijnaldum – 5: Perhaps could be the ongoing Reds contract impasse or the transfer links to FC Barcelona. Whatever it maybe. Looked very sluggish and conceded possessions. Progressed better during the Second Half and showed more attacking intent, after the Gunners slowly became tired.
James Milner – 6: Hard working as ever especially defensively and tried to initiate the Reds counter attack. Picked up a yellow card for a needless tackle on Nketiah in the Second Half.
Fabinho – 5: Not one of the best game for the tough tackling Brazilian and was unable to impose himself in the game. Later switched to Centre Back in the Second Half as the Reds searched for an equaliser.
Sadio Mané – 6: Very quite game for the Senegalese. Attack lacked intent. With 9 minutes to go, could have scored with calm finishing.
Roberto Firmino – 5: Very quite game for the Brazilian standards with few touches and one curled effort wide off the post in the Second Half.
Mohamed Salah – 5: Invisible in the First Half and conceded the ball easily but became much sharper in the attack during the Second Half (particularly with the introduction of Takumi Minamino).
Takumi Minamino – 7: Brought on to replace the young Neco Williams. Scored the equaliser in the 73rd minute. Looked lively and threatening right from the word go! The Reds attack became much sharper with his introduction in the 59th minute.
Naby Keita – 7: Should have started in place of Wijnaldum. The Reds missed the dynamism and X-Factor that Keita brings into the Reds attack in the First Half. Brought on to replace the industrious Milner in the 59th minute. Alongside Minamino, the Reds got into the attacking groove and kept relentlessly pressing the tiring Gunners.
Curtis Jones – N/A: Brought on to replace Firmino in the 83rd minute. Scored in the Penalty Shootout.
Rhian Brewster – N/A: Brought on to replace Wijnaldum in the 92nd minute with the game heading into the Penalty Shootouts. Tough luck for the promising youngster for being the only one to miss the Penalty Shootouts. The youngster will have plenty of time to shine.
Jürgen Klopp – 5: Baffling selections by not bringing on the energetic Keita and in-form Minamino in the Starting XI (instead of Wijnaldum and Neco Williams for starters).
Then again, by not fielding a near full strength side, Klopp (as usual) shows little respect toward Community Shield (like all other domestic cup competitions).
Under Klopp, the Reds’s Achilles heel has always been playing against oppositions that are comfortable defending deep and attack on the counter.
Arsenal’s tactics employed especially today against the Reds mirrors that of the well drilled defensive sides like Atlético Madrid.
With no creative attacking midfield option in the squad, the Reds (under Klopp) has no clear Plan B against defensive minded sides.
